Russia ocean freight by the numbers

Last updated:

Shipzy samples 29 port-to-port lanes for Russia, on which 2 ocean carriers publish schedules, connecting 14 countries.

The fastest scheduled transit is 4 days, the median scheduled transit is 50 days, and 9 in 10 sampled sailings complete within 68 days.

5% of the 116 sampled sailings are direct; the remainder route via a transshipment hub.

The VGM cutoff falls a median of 4 days before departure, across 73 sampled sailings.

Figures describe 116 sailings sampled from 2 carrier APIs, last refreshed 15 October 2026.

How these numbers are measured

Figures come from the ocean schedule APIs Shipzy integrates with: CMA CGM, MSC. They describe the lanes Shipzy samples, not every sailing serving Russia.

The nightly sync sweeps nine global hub ports plus a set of regional template lanes, storing up to three sailings per lane, and refreshes one country per night. So coverage leans towards intercontinental routings, and the as-of date above can be several weeks old for smaller markets.

Transit figures are medians rather than averages, so a few multi-transshipment routings cannot distort them. Cutoff lead times exclude carrier-estimated cutoffs and any lead outside a 0–21 day window. Emissions figures are not published here, because only one carrier reports measured CO2; the rest are modelled from transit time and would restate transit days as emissions.

  • Carriers sampled: Derived from ocean schedules published by 2 carrier APIs, as of 15 October 2026.
  • Of global fleet capacity: Sum of each sampled carrier’s share of global container capacity. Describes the carriers, not this country’s market share.
  • Port-to-port lanes: Derived from ocean schedules published by 2 carrier APIs, as of 15 October 2026.
  • Countries connected: Derived from ocean schedules published by 2 carrier APIs, as of 15 October 2026.
  • Fastest transit: Derived from ocean schedules published by 2 carrier APIs, as of 15 October 2026.
  • Median transit: Median of 116 scheduled transit times. Median, not mean — a few multi-transshipment routings would distort an average.
  • Direct sailings: Share of 116 sampled sailings with no transshipment. Carriers count legs slightly differently, so treat as indicative.
  • Named services: Derived from ocean schedules published by 2 carrier APIs, as of 15 October 2026.
  • Vessels seen: Derived from ocean schedules published by 2 carrier APIs, as of 15 October 2026. Counted by vessel name, so spelling variants may inflate this slightly.

Logistics Overview

Russia spans eleven time zones with gateways on three seas — St. Petersburg on the Baltic, Novorossiysk on the Black Sea, Vladivostok/Vostochny on the Pacific — plus the Trans-Siberian rail spine.

Infrastructure Advantage

International sanctions since 2022 have reshaped routings, carriers, and payment channels; many Western lines no longer call Russian ports, with volumes shifting to Asian carriers, Far East gateways, and overland China corridors. Compliance screening is now the first step of any Russia-related shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about logistics in Russia

What must be checked before shipping to or from Russia?+

Sanctions compliance first: goods classification against export-control lists, counterparty screening, and payment-channel viability. Reputable forwarders will run this screening before quoting.

Which routings currently carry Russia trade?+

Far East ports (Vladivostok/Vostochny) with Asian carriers, China–Russia rail and road corridors, and remaining Black Sea/Baltic services — availability shifts, so verify at booking time.

How long does shipping from China to Moscow take?+

Rail typically 14–25 days; ocean via Far East ports plus Trans-Siberian rail roughly 30–45 days.

Are Western carriers still serving Russian ports?+

Most major Western container lines suspended direct calls; capacity is provided largely by Russian and Asian operators. Your forwarder should confirm current options.

How do I find a reliable freight forwarder for Russia?+

Use the ranked list where available and insist on documented sanctions-compliance processes alongside operational capability.
